Application
The International Graduate School of Neuroscience offers an Online Application (see link below).
The application process consists of three parts:
- Online application (If the online application is closed, please contact the coordinator, Mrs. Ursula Heiler, at heiler-igsn@rub.de for further information.)
- Completion of cover sheet and other relevant documents after successful online application
- Submission of two recommendation letters
1. Online Application
Before starting your application, we strongly recommend preparing the following details to copy and paste into the online form:
- Personal information (name, date of birth, email address, physical address etc.)
- Academic history (subjects, degrees, universities, scholarships, awards, qualifications, languages, etc.)
- Work experience (if applicable: employer, position, etc.)
- Names and contact details of two referees (including email address, physical address and URL)
- Scientific interests
- State your preference in neuroscience and the name of the department where you plan to conduct your PhD.
- Indicate the name of your 1st supervisor in whose laboratory you plan to pursue your research. You are urged to match your interests with the research fields of the participating investigator.
- Thesis and research experience (if applicable: max. 250 words)
- Provide the title of your Master’s or Diploma thesis, supervisor’s name, and the period within which the project was completed.
- Summarize the project’s aims, key results, and your contribution.
- If you have carried out research prior to your Diploma or Master’s thesis, or since then, please describe this briefly in a separate paragraph.
- Experimental skills
- Publications or patents (if applicable)
- Motivation for entry into the program
- Briefly discuss your reasons for applying and pursuing advanced studies in neuroscience.
- Envisaged career
- Extracurricular interests
- Financial statement
- Research proposal
- The international postgraduate program is strongly research-oriented. Write a short research proposal about the scientific work you will conduct in your PhD project. Please state which funds and equipment are available.
Proceed with the Online Application
2. Completion of Application Cover Sheet
After completing the online application form, you will receive an acknowledgment of your application by email and will be asked to download an application cover sheet. Please:
- Print the cover sheet.
- Fill in the relevant information.
- Return it with copies of the relevant certificates and degrees before the application deadline. (Translations into German or English are required.)

3. Submission of Two Recommendation Letters
Forward the referee report form (PDF format) to two academic teachers of your choice (those you named in the online application) who are able to evaluate your personality, academic experience, and intellectual merit.
Recommendation letters can:
- Be included with your application cover sheet (preferably in sealed envelopes), or
- Be sent directly to the IGSN coordination office by the referees.
Use of the IGSN Reference Report Form is recommended.
